That Word: Conscience

That Word is the segment on my blog where I post new words that I discover newly or have jumped out at me once again. If you love finding new words this post is for you. If you're a writer looking for different words to describe some this post may also be for you.

Conscience

Where I Discovered It

This is another word that found it's way onto a list on my phone for whatever reason. I suspect I did not entirely know what the word meant at the time or it was one that confused me.

Defintion/s

  1. the inner sense of what is right and wrong in one's conduct and motives, impelling one towards right action
  2. the complex of ethical and moral principles that controls or inhibits the actions or thoughts of an individual.
  3. an inhibiting sense of what is prudent

An Example Sentence

The conscience was what their side in the civil war fought for.

My Thoughts

This is a word that has confused me in the past. I knew the definition for conscience, but there was also a similarity with the word, conscious, that lead me to be confused with spelling. I think the best way to remember the difference is that conscience holds con and science in one word. While conscious is missing the science. The trouble is the words also sound awfully similar as well. To know the difference one would have to listen carefully as well.

What do you think of Conscience? Have you ever had trouble with Conscience and Conscious? Is it a word you would include in your writing often? Do you see it around often? Please comment and let me know your thoughts.
